Clintwood
is a small town located in Dickenson County in the southwest corner of Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the population was 1,549 residents. Originally called Holly Creek after a small stream that runs through the town, the name was later changed to Clintwood after Major Henry Clinton Wood, a Confederate officer in the Civil War. Clintwood is home to Bear Pen Recreation Area, which includes a pool, picnic shelters, a hiking trail, a field for other activities and riverfront. Cranes Nest River and Recreation/Camping Area includes fishing spots, several playgrounds, walking/hiking/biking trails and a campground with RV sites. The town of Clintwood is also near Breaks Interstate Park. Also referred to as "the Grand Canyon of the South," Breaks Interstate Park is one of two interstate parks in the U.S., located in southeastern Kentucky and southwestern Virginia at the terminus of Pine Mountain Ridge. The park itself covers 4,500 acres and the main feature, Breaks Canyon, is the deepest gorge east of the Mississippi River. It is five miles long and ranges from 830 feet to 1,600 feet deep. The canyon was formed by the Russell Fork River through millions of years of erosion. Mountain biking, horseback riding, hiking, fishing and camping are available in the park.

Southwestern Virginia has a four-season climate classified as humid continental.
The state of Virginia has five different climate regions: the Tidewater, Piedmont, Northern Virginia, Western Mountain, and Southwestern Mountain regions. Annual rainfall totals can vary from a sparse thirty-three inches in the Shenandoah Valley to more than sixty inches in the mountains of southwestern Virginia. Thunderstorms may occur anytime of the year, but are most common in summer. Thunderstorms are most frequent in southern Virginia, particularly in the far southwestern section. Heavy snowfalls are usually confined to the more mountainous regions of the state.
