Lake-Gaston
is a reservoir located on the border of Virginia and North Carolina. The lake is in Halifax, Northampton and Warren Counties in North Carolina and Brunswick and Mecklenburg Counties in Virginia. It's near the city of Roanoke Rapids, NC and Clarksville and South Hill, VA. Lake Gaston is approximately 35 miles long and over 20,000 acres with 350 miles of shoreline. The lake was formed from impounding the Roanoke River in 1963 as a result of building the Gaston Dam to generate electricity. The dam is located on the North Carolina side of the lake. Lake Gaston is a popular place for fishing, boating, jet-skiing and camping. More than 150,000 residents live around the lake. It became a popular retirement destination for seniors from all around the country since the 1970s due to its' rural feel and natural beauty, yet close proximity to bigger cities. The lake is also popular as a recreational lake because of its' location to the Research Triangle region of North Carolina and its proximity to I-85 and I-95. There are few waterfront lots remaining on best parts of the lake, and many buyers are purchasing smaller homes and demolishing them to make way for much larger vacation homes. Waterfront lots now are sold at a high premium, most well over $300,000.

Lake Gaston Weather & Climate

The North Central region of the state has a moderate climate; four seasons without the extremes seen in other parts of the country. Latitude accounts for some climatic variations, as do soils, plant cover and inland bodies of water. The central region, in winter, is protected by the western mountain ranges, so temps are usually 10-20 degrees warmer than in the mountains. In summer, when the air is dry enough to keep cloudiness at a minimum for several days, temperatures may reach 100 in the interior at elevations below 1,500 feet. Usually, however, clouds limit the sun's heating capacity and an entire summer sometimes passes without a high of even 90 degrees. North Carolina is outside the usual tornado path in the United States, but tropical hurricanes do come close enough to influence the weather about twice in an average year.
