Northern-Neck is the northernmost of three peninsulas (traditionally called necks in Virginia) on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay. The Northern Neck is bounded by the Potomac River on the north and the Rappahannock River on the south. It encompasses the following Virginia counties: Lancaster, Northumberland, Richmond, and Westmoreland. Historically, the grant for the Northern Neck included all land between the Rappahannock and Potomac rivers including far upstream of King George County. Traditionally, however, references in the last 100 years have not included King George as a part of the Northern Neck but some current tourism material does include it. As the Washington and Fredericksburg corridors have urbanized in the last 50 years, King George County has become more culturally aligned with the Northern Neck. This has led to some people including it in region. The Northern Neck is rich in scenic beauty, with 1100 miles of shoreline containing beaches, marinas, old steamship wharfs and small towns that date back to colonial times. Small farms, vineyards and wineries are interspersed with retirement communities and rural businesses. Significant portions of the Rappahannock River National Wildlife Refuge lie in the Northern Neck. It is also home to five state parks/natural areas, including Caledon Natural Area, Bush Mill Stream Natural Area Preserve, Dameron Marsh Natural area, Westmoreland State Park, and Belle Isle State Park. One national park, the George Washington Birthplace National Monument, is also located in The Northern Neck. The region is also home to several local museums and festivals.

Northern Neck Weather & Climate

Northeast Virginia's climate is classified as mild, mid-latitude, with a subcategory of humid subtropical. Northeast Virginia generally has mild winters with no dry season and hot summers. Hurricanes make the coastal areas of Virginia vulnerable, but it's rare for a major hurricane to threaten the Virginia coast as hurricanes that far north tend to weaken due to cooler coast waters and increasingly westerly winds. Heavy rain from tropical cyclones are possible, however. Thunderstorms are an occasional concern with the state averaging anywhere from 30-50 days of thunderstorm activity annually, but the highest area of occurrence is towards the west.
