Lake-Anna is the second largest freshwater lake in the state of Virginia. It's located 72 miles south of Washington D.C. in Louisa and Spotsylvania Counties in the northeastern part of the state. The northern tips of the lake also reach into Orange County, Virginia. Easily accessible from Richmond and Charlottesville, Lake Anna is one of the most popular recreational lakes in the state. With over 250 miles of shoreline and approximately 13,000 surface acres of water, Lake Anna is a premier location for swimming, sailing, boating and world-class fishing. Surrounding attractions include vineyards, antique shops, golf, historic sites and theme parks. Boats are available for rent and there are several marinas and businesses around the lake. Anglers fish for over 30 species of fish including large mouth bass, striped bass, walleye, catfish, crappie, bluegill and white and yellow perch. Lakefront picnic areas and wooded hiking trails are also popular. On summer weekends, interpretive nature and history programs are on exhibit in the visitor center. Lake Anna State Park has rental cabins, camping, lakeshore picnicking, a guarded swimming beach, a children's play area, boat ramp, a food concession stand, a bathhouse and a children's and handicapped fishing pond. Lake Anna is the site of Rumpus in Bumpass, an annual spring triathlon festival, and also the Giant Acorn Triathlon weekend in the fall. This beautiful lake is not only a vacation destination, but has become a popular retirement and second-home location for many.

Lake Anna Weather & Climate

North Central Virginia's Piedmont Region has a humid, subtropical climate with four, distinct seasons. Heavy snows are common in the wintertime in the Piedmont region, while the rest of the state may receive only a fraction of snow. Cold air masses arriving from the Blue Ridge Mountains, especially during the winter, can lead to significant snowfall and ice storms from early November to mid-March. Thunderstorms are possible in all months of the year, but more common in the warm, humid days of summer. Although the temperature of Virginia varies according to location, it generally becomes increasingly warmer farther to the south. During the month of September, anywhere from 10 to 40 percent of Virginias rainfall comes from hurricanes and tropical storms.
