Moneta
is an unincorporated community in Bedford County, in central Virginia. It's located along Route 122 between Bedford and Rocky Mount. Moneta was made popular as the shooting location for scenes in the movie "What About Bob." In the movie, Bob arrived by bus with his goldfish and went into a local general store, which still stands. The community of Moneta is near Smith Mountain Lake, which was also featured in the movie. Moneta is at the west end of the lake, about 30-45 minutes from Roanoke and Lynchburg. One of Virginia's most popular lakes, Smith Mountain Lake offers 500-miles of shoreline. It's called the "Jewel of the Blue Ridge Mountains," and offers boating, sailing, canoeing, swimming, fishing, water-skiing, jet skiing and parasailing. The Smith Mountain lakefront includes seven public boat launching sites and many public and private marinas. Nearby are five challenging golf courses that surround the lake, with homes, condominiums and community centers built around the golf courses. The Smith Mountain Lake State Park includes many miles of hiking trails, but the narrow, winding roads with narrow shoulders make bicycling unsafe. Smith Mountain Lake also offers picnicking, camping, hunting, antiquing, shopping, and relaxing. Restaurants in the area offer everything from pizza and sandwiches to prime rib and gourmet cuisine. Many vacation rentals are available near Moneta and Smith Mountain Lake, by the weekend, week or month.

Central Virginia ranges in elevation from 420 feet to 4200 feet above sea level. The four-season climate in this region is classified as humid continental, but few states have a more diverse climate than that of Virginia. In the mountainous regions of central Virginia, summer temperatures are significantly lower than the region's major metropolitan areas. It is not uncommon to experience temperatures twelve to fifteen degrees lower than Charlottesville and more than 18 degrees lower than experienced on the same day in Richmond, Washington D.C. and Raleigh/Durham. These same patterns also bring enough snow in winter to rank the area as one of the finest ski destinations in the Mid-Atlantic region.
