Natural-Bridge
, known as Natty B by locals, is located in Rockbridge County in west-central Virginia. It is a geological formation in which Cedar Creek (a small tributary of the James River) has carved out a gorge in the mountainous limestone terrain, forming a 215-foot arch "bridge" with a span of 90 feet. Natural Bridge has been designated a Virginia Historical Landmark and a National Historical Landmark. The natural arch bridge was a sacred site of the Native American Monacan tribe, who believed it to be the site of a major victory over pursuing Powhatans centuries before the arrival of whites in Virginia. Some believe George Washington came to the site in 1750 as a young surveyor. The initials G.W. are carved on the wall of the bridge and many believe they were put there by the future president. Thomas Jefferson purchased 157 acres of land, including the Natural Bridge, from King George III of England for 20 shillings in 1774. He called it the most Sublime of natures works, and built a two-room log cabin there to use as a retreat. Today, there is a fee to view the bridge from below, but the top of the bridge can be seen for free from U.S. Highway 11, which runs on top of it. Following the trail under the bridge takes visitors to the end of the trail, beyond which the remnant of the waterfall that helped to form the bridge can be seen. Natural Bridge is also the name of a town located near the natural arch bridge.

Northeast Virginia's climate is classified as mild, mid-latitude, with a subcategory of humid subtropical. Northeast Virginia generally has mild winters with no dry season and hot summers. Hurricanes make the coastal areas of Virginia vulnerable, but it's rare for a major hurricane to threaten the Virginia coast as hurricanes that far north tend to weaken due to cooler coast waters and increasingly westerly winds. Heavy rain from tropical cyclones are possible, however. Thunderstorms are an occasional concern with the state averaging anywhere from 30-50 days of thunderstorm activity annually, but the highest area of occurrence is towards the west.
