Fredericksburg
is an independent city located in northeast Virginia, approximately 50 miles south of Washington D.C. As of the 2000 census, the population was 19,279. Fredericksburg is 58 miles north of Richmond. Located on the Rappahannock River, Fredericksburg developed as the frontier of colonial Virginia shifted west out of the coastal plain. The land on which the city was founded was part of a tract patented in 1671. Fredericksburg is a city filled with history from the early Colonial Days to the Civil War and beyond. A fine example is Chatham, the only house in America to be visited by both George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. In the 1700s it was owned by William Fitzhugh, a wealthy planter and politician. During the Civil War it served the Union Army as both a headquarters and hospital. Other places of interest include Ellwood, an 18th century building used as a Union headquarters during the Battle of the Wilderness, where Confederate General "Stonewall" Jackson received care. Fredericksburg is also home to the Fredericksburg Area Museum & Cultural Center, the Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania National Military Park and George Washington's Ferry Farm. The latter is the boyhood home of George Washington, and its here that the infamous story of the cherry tree took place. The Fredericksburg area also offers abundant recreational activities such as golf, boating, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, rafting, hiking, biking and birdwatching.

Northeast Virginia's climate is classified as mild, mid-latitude, with a subcategory of humid subtropical. Northeast Virginia generally has mild winters with no dry season and hot summers. Hurricanes make the coastal areas of Virginia vulnerable, but it's rare for a major hurricane to threaten the Virginia coast as hurricanes that far north tend to weaken due to cooler coast waters and increasingly westerly winds. Heavy rain from tropical cyclones are possible, however. Thunderstorms are an occasional concern with the state averaging anywhere from 30-50 days of thunderstorm activity annually, but the highest area of occurrence is towards the west.
