Alexandria , Virginia is located on the western bank of the Potomac River about six miles south of downtown Washington D.C. As of the 2000 census, the population was 128,283. Much of modern Alexandria has been shaped by its proximity to the nation's capital. Many of its residents work for the federal civil service, U.S. military or for one of the many companies that provide services to the federal government. The city of Alexandria is made up of several different compact, walkable neighborhoods. Old Town, which is situated along the Potomac River, is the historic center and the oldest section of the city, laid out in 1749. It's a major draw for tourists, with its' high-end boutiques, fine restaurants, art galleries, historic homes and antique shops. Historic landmarks in Old Town include the boyhood home of General Robert E. Lee and the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Shop. River cruise boats are available and Market Square is the oldest continuously operating marketplace in the U.S., home to a farmer's market each Saturday morning. Just west of Old Town is the city's oldest planned residential community called Rosemont. Another interesting neighborhood is The Berg. Located on the northern limits of Old Town, The Berg is the remnants of a historic, predominantly African American community. Other attractions in Alexandria include Cameron Run Regional Park, the George Washington Masonic National Memorial, Gadsby's Tavern, Jones Point Light and Collingwood Library & Museum. George Washington's home, Mount Vernon, is located just 8 miles south of Old Town Alexandria.

Alexandria Weather & Climate

Northeast Virginia's climate is classified as mild, mid-latitude, with a subcategory of humid subtropical. Northeast Virginia generally has mild winters with no dry season and hot summers. Hurricanes make the coastal areas of Virginia vulnerable, but it's rare for a major hurricane to threaten the Virginia coast as hurricanes that far north tend to weaken due to cooler coast waters and increasingly westerly winds. Heavy rain from tropical cyclones are possible, however. Thunderstorms are an occasional concern with the state averaging anywhere from 30-50 days of thunderstorm activity annually, but the highest area of occurrence is towards the west.
