Fairfax is an independent city completely surrounded by Fairfax County in the northeast corner of Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the population of Fairfax was 21,498. There are many historic buildings in the city, including the former county courthouse, which is the oldest and most historic. The first meeting of the Fairfax Court was held there on April 21, 1800. During the American Civil War the Courthouse was used by the Union forces as military headquarters. Other historic sites include the Fairfax Elementary School and the Old Town Hall. The Fairfax Museum & Visitor Center provides information for visiting the whole area of Northern Virginia, Tysons Corner, Manassas and Washington D.C., as well as the Shenandoah Valley and Skyline Drive. The Civil War Interpretive Center at Historic Blenheim is a 12-acre site that features an exhibition gallery and a multipurpose classroom. The on-site gift shop stocks books, original signed art prints, childrens toys and games, replica items, and souvenirs related to the Civil War and Fairfax history. Fairfax is also home to several annual festivals, including the Chocolate Lovers Festival in February, Spotlight on the Arts in April, Irish Festival in September and the Festival of Lights and Carols in December. Every other year in the spring, a Civil War re-enactment camp is held at Blenheim estate, a city-owned historical property. Alternating with the Civil War encampment is an Historic Homes Tour of homes in the city.

Fairfax Weather & Climate

Northeast Virginia's climate is classified as mild, mid-latitude, with a subcategory of humid subtropical. Northeast Virginia generally has mild winters with no dry season and hot summers. Hurricanes make the coastal areas of Virginia vulnerable, but it's rare for a major hurricane to threaten the Virginia coast as hurricanes that far north tend to weaken due to cooler coast waters and increasingly westerly winds. Heavy rain from tropical cyclones are possible, however. Thunderstorms are an occasional concern with the state averaging anywhere from 30-50 days of thunderstorm activity annually, but the highest area of occurrence is towards the west.
