Haymarket
is a small village in Prince William County in northeastern Virginia. The population was 879 as of the 2000 census. The town is situated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, just a short distance from the lovely rolling hills of Virginia's horse country. It's also just minutes to the city of Manassas and Washington D.C. is less than an hour away. The town was established in 1799 along an abandoned Indian hunting path which became Old Carolina Road. It was used by settlers as a route from Pennsylvania to the Carolinas. At one time, it was well known for the Red House Tavern and the Jockey Club, an organization that sponsored horse races of the town's track. In 1862, nearly all of the town was burned by Union troops in the Civil War. Only St. Pauls Church and three small houses nearby were spared. The town did not die, however, but was rebuilt. Many of the buildings from the reconstruction period are still standing, as are the only two buildings that survived the 1862 fire. Several quaint shops are housed in the restored buildings. The Haymarket Museum is located at the corner of Washington Street (Route 55) and Fayette Street. Admission is free to the museum, which chronicles the story of a small, 19th century town and its surrounding agricultural community. The building in which the museum is housed was originally built in 1833 as the town's school, which later became the Town Hall.

Northern Virginia offers a climate with four distinct seasons. Spring and fall are generally comfortable and mild with possible rain showers. Summers are hot and humid with average temperatures in the 80s. Sudden thunderstorms are possible in summer. July and August are the hottest months. Winters in northern Virginia are cool to cold, with an average temperature of 41 degrees. The Appalachians of West Virginia, just a few miles west of Virginia has some of the deepest snowfalls in the U.S. Virginia, being in West Virginias snow shadow, usually receives only a fraction of this amount. When sufficient cold air invades Virginia from the west and northwest, however, frontal storms may cause heavy snowfalls.
