Chincoteague-Island is a resort island located in Accomack County off Virginia's eastern shore. There is also a fishing village named Chincoteague located on the island. As of the 2000 census, the population was 4,317 residents. The island is 7 miles long and 1.5 miles wide and abounds with charm, history and wildlife. There are miles of undeveloped beaches, marshes and forest, and the island is famous for its oyster beds and clam shoals. It's probably most well known, however, for the Chincoteague Ponies, although they are not actually on this island but on nearby Assateague Island. A legend has it that the feral ponies on Assateague are descendants of survivors of a Spanish galleon that sank on its way to Mexico during a storm off the coast of the island. More likely, they are actually descended from domesticated stock, brought to the island by Eastern Shore farmers in the 17th century to avoid fencing requirements. The town of Chincoteague features numerous small hotels, bed and breakfasts and campgrounds, several restaurants, ice cream parlors and miniature golf. There are three museums on the island: Beebe Ranch, the Oyster and Maritime Museum and the Refuge Waterfowl Museum. Other activities on Chincoteague Island include swimming, surfing, fishing, crabbing, boating, hiking, biking, lighthouse tours and guided wildlife tours. The island also hosts the annual Chincoteague Oyster Festival and 2nd Saturday Art Strolls between April and November.

Chincoteague Island Weather & Climate

The Eastern Islands of Virginia , off the Pacific Coast, have summers that are generally hot and humid. Mosquitoes and ticks are abundant from spring through autumn. Insect repellent and/or protective clothing is recommended. It rarely snows on the offshore islands in the winter but the weather is often damp and cold. Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended for long walks in the sand and hard sole water shoes for wading in bay waters. Hurricanes and tropical storms, including those immediately offshore, occur most frequently in early August and September and rarely appear before June or after November. During the month of September, anywhere from 10 to 40 percent of Virginias rainfall comes from tropical storms. Thunderstorms may occur in all months of the year.
