Onancock
is a town located in Accomack County, which is nestled between two forks of a creek on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. It's surrounded by the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. As of the 2000 census, the population of Onancock was 1,525. The Eastern Shore of Virginia contains several tiny towns, winding waterways, farms and forests. Onancock was founded in 1680, and although small, there is lots to do here. The Ker Place House Museum is an elegant Federal style home that dates to the early 1800s, and free walking tour brochures are available that leads visitors past other historic homes and beautiful gardens. Onancock is a compact town that is easy to stroll. The town also offers several art galleries and unique shops, good restaurants and half a dozen places to stay, including a Victorian bed and breakfast and a boutique hotel. Onancock also has a classic old-time movie theater built in 1950 that still shows new movies every weekend. Other activities to enjoy on the island include canoeing and kayaking, biking and hiking. Bikes rentals are available on the island and the terrain is nice and flat for easy pedaling.

Onancock Weather & Climate

The Eastern Islands of Virginia , off the Pacific Coast, have summers that are generally hot and humid. Mosquitoes and ticks are abundant from spring through autumn. Insect repellent and/or protective clothing is recommended. It rarely snows on the offshore islands in the winter but the weather is often damp and cold. Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended for long walks in the sand and hard sole water shoes for wading in bay waters. Hurricanes and tropical storms, including those immediately offshore, occur most frequently in early August and September and rarely appear before June or after November. During the month of September, anywhere from 10 to 40 percent of Virginias rainfall comes from tropical storms. Thunderstorms may occur in all months of the year.
