Cape-Charles
is located in Northampton County at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay on Virginia's eastern shore. As of the 2000 census, the population was 1,134. It was founded in 1884 as a planned community for the railroad and ferry. For many years, Cape Charles was the terminal for passenger and car ferry service across the bay to Norfolk and Hampton. The last ferry left Cape Charles in 1953, but it still serves as a terminal for railway barges that carry rail cars across the mouth of the bay to Norfolk. The town of Cape Charles is home to several restaurants and shops, a museum, bed and breakfasts and summer rentals. There's a public beach, harbor and marinas, golf and sport fishing. Points of interest include the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, the Eastern Shore National Wildlife Refuge and Kiptopeke State Park. The Bay Creek Railroad offers excursions on a restored 1913 Interurban Dining Car. The dining excursion lasts about two hours and a "fun run" lasts about an hour. Cape Charles also has one of the largest concentrations of late Victorian and turn-of-the-century buildings on the East Coast. The town has been designated a Historic District on the Virginia Landmarks Register and is also on the National Register of Historic Places. The Cape Charles-Northampton Chamber of Commerce sponsors a series of Applaud the Sun Harbor Parties from 6:30pm to 10:30pm on the first Saturday of each month, June through September.

Northeast Virginia's climate is classified as mild, mid-latitude, with a subcategory of humid subtropical. Northeast Virginia generally has mild winters with no dry season and hot summers. Hurricanes make the coastal areas of Virginia vulnerable, but it's rare for a major hurricane to threaten the Virginia coast as hurricanes that far north tend to weaken due to cooler coast waters and increasingly westerly winds. Heavy rain from tropical cyclones are possible, however. Thunderstorms are an occasional concern with the state averaging anywhere from 30-50 days of thunderstorm activity annually, but the highest area of occurrence is towards the west.
