Chesapeake
is an independent city located in the South Hampton Roads area of southeast Virginia. One of the Seven Cities of Hampton Roads, Chesapeake was formed in 1963 by a consolidation of the city of South Norfolk and the former Norfolk County, which dated to 1691. Chesapeake is the second-largest city by land area in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the third largest city in terms of population, with an estimated 220,560 residents. Chesapeake is a very urban area, but also has many miles of protected farmland, forests and wetlands, including a substantial portion of the Great Dismal Swamp. Chesapeake is also located on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. On the waterway, at Great Bridge where the locks transition from the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River to the Chesapeake and Albemarle Canal lies the site of the Revoluntionary War's Battle of Great Bridge. The city of Chesapeake offers beautiful parks, hiking trails, golf, and unlimited outdoor recreation. Also historic sites, fine dining and shopping, culture and nightlife. It's just 20 minutes from the Virginia Beach oceanfront, 15 minutes from downtown Norfolk and 45 minutes from Colonial Williamsburg. The Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is 111,000 acres of forested wetland and wilderness, home to many mammal species. Other nearby attractions include Lake Drummond, the second largest lake in Virginia, and Northwest River Park, which runs along the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail.

Northeast Virginia's climate is classified as mild, mid-latitude, with a subcategory of humid subtropical. Northeast Virginia generally has mild winters with no dry season and hot summers. Hurricanes make the coastal areas of Virginia vulnerable, but it's rare for a major hurricane to threaten the Virginia coast as hurricanes that far north tend to weaken due to cooler coast waters and increasingly westerly winds. Heavy rain from tropical cyclones are possible, however. Thunderstorms are an occasional concern with the state averaging anywhere from 30-50 days of thunderstorm activity annually, but the highest area of occurrence is towards the west.
