Norfolk
is the second-largest city in Virginia, with a population of 237,764 residents. It is an independent city located in the Hampton Roads region, which consists of nine cities and seven counties along the Eastern seaboard of the U.S. The city of Norfolk is home of the worlds largest Naval base, has miles of sandy Chesapeake Bay beaches, a historic downtown district, a complex of waterfront shops and restaurants, a collection of cruise boats and ferries, and several excellent museums. Centered around the port of Hampton Roads, one of the largest, naturally deep, ice-free harbors in the world, one can watch tugs, barges, sailboats, and navy ships moving in and out of the port through the Elizabeth River. Norfolks downtown waterfront area is located right on the banks of the Elizabeth River and is a vibrant tourist district. The Norfolk Waterside Marketplace, the centerpiece of the waterfront district, offers fine dining and all kinds of shopping. Special events, such as the annual Norfolk Harborfest, are held next to Waterside, at the waterfront Town Point Park. Another unique event is the Parade of Sail, which features numerous tall sailing ships from around the world that form in line and sail past downtown before docking at the marina. This event also includes music concerts, regional food, and a large fireworks display. Other Norfolk festivals include the Bayou Boogaloo and Cajun Food Festival, Norfolk Jazz Festival, Town Point Virginia Wine Festival and a special 4th of July Celebration with fireworks over the harbor.

Southeast Virginia , along the eastern seaboard, has a mild four-season climate and the weather is generally temperate and seasonal. It is classified as humid, sub-tropical. Summers are hot and humid with cool evenings. The wettest seasons are the spring and summer, although rainfall is fairly constant year-round. The mean annual temperature is 60 °F (16 °C), with an average annual snowfall of six inches and an average annual rainfall of 47 inches. Severe weather, in the form of tornadoes, tropical cyclones, and winter storms impact the state on a regular basis. Most occur in August and September, but plenty of warning is given for these types of storms.
