Virginia-Beach
is a popular beach resort city located in the Hampton Roads region of southeast Virginia. It's situated on the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay, part of the Hampton Roads region. Virginia Beach is the largest city in Virginia with a population of 440,415 as of 2008. It is the easternmost of the Seven Cities of Hampton Roads, also known as "America's First Region." Virginia Beach has miles of beautiful, sandy beaches and hundreds of hotels, motels and restaurants along its oceanfront. The city is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as having the longest pleasure beach in the world. The famous Virginia Beach three-mile boardwalk is packed with entertainment, outdoor cafes and restaurants, concerts, a bike path and is often crowded with people. Each year the city hosts the East Coast Surfing Championships and the North American Sand Soccer Championship. It's also home to several state parks, several long-protected beach areas, three military bases, two universities, and numerous historic sites. Near the point where the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean meet, Cape Henry was the site of the first landing of the English colonists, who eventually settled in Jamestown, on April 26, 1607. Virginia Beach has 18 sites on the National Register of Historic Places, including Cape Henry Lights and the Adam Thoroughgood House, which is one of the oldest surviving colonial homes in Virginia. Several festivals are also held each year on the city's Oceanfront, including the Neptune Festival and the American Music Festival.

Southeast Virginia , along the eastern seaboard, has a mild four-season climate and the weather is generally temperate and seasonal. It is classified as humid, sub-tropical. Summers are hot and humid with cool evenings. The wettest seasons are the spring and summer, although rainfall is fairly constant year-round. The mean annual temperature is 60 °F (16 °C), with an average annual snowfall of six inches and an average annual rainfall of 47 inches. Severe weather, in the form of tornadoes, tropical cyclones, and winter storms impact the state on a regular basis. Most occur in August and September, but plenty of warning is given for these types of storms.
