Jamestown
is located about 40 miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean and the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay (45 miles southeast of Richmond.) It was founded on May 14, 1607 and is commonly regarded as the first permanent English settlement in the United States. Located in James City County when it was formed in 1634 as one of the original 8 shires of Virginia, Jamestown was the capital of the Colony for 83 years. Jamestown is one of three places comprising the Historic Triangle of Colonial Virginia, which also includes Yorktown and Williamsburg. There are two areas to visit in Jamestown: Historic Jamestown, on Jamestown Island, is a cooperative effort by Jamestown National Historic Site, a part of Colonial National Historic Park, which is a unit of the National Park Service. The other attraction is Jamestown Settlement, located 1.25 miles from the historic location of the colony. Jamestown Settlement is a living history interpretive site that was established for the 350th anniversary celebration of Jamestown in 1957. A ferry provides service across a part of the James River and offers passengers a view of Jamestown Island from the river, which is probably not greatly different from what the first colonists saw 400 years earlier. Just 11 miles east on the scenic Colonial Parkway, visitors can tour Colonial Williamsburg, and another 13 miles east takes you to Yorktown. Yorktown Battlefield is a part of the Colonial National Historical Park and is the site of the actual Battle of Yorktown. About one mile from the battlefield, the Yorktown Victory Center is another living history interpretive site operated by the Jamestown Yorktown Foundation.

Southeast Virginia ,along the eastern seaboard, has a mild four-season climate and the weather is generally temperate and seasonal. It is classified as humid, sub-tropical. Summers are hot and humid with cool evenings. The wettest seasons are the spring and summer, although rainfall is fairly constant year-round. The mean annual temperature is 60 °F (16 °C), with an average annual snowfall of six inches and an average annual rainfall of 47 inches. Severe weather, in the form of tornadoes, tropical cyclones, and winter storms impact the state on a regular basis. Most occur in August and September, but plenty of warning is given for these types of storms.
