Hartfield
is a small community located in Middlesex County in eastern Virginia. Middlesex County is located on the Middle Peninsula in the Chesapeake Bay Region, bounded on the north by the Rappahannock River, on the south by the Piankatank River, and on the east by the Chesapeake Bay. This tranquil rural community is surrounded by 135-square-miles of shoreline. Many marinas and yacht harbors are in the area, and popular recreational activities include fishing, swimming and other water sports. The village of Hartfield is near the town of Urbanna, home to the Urbanna Oyster Festival. This is one of the oldest and most popular festivals in the state of Virginia. For more than fifty years, the Oyster Festival has been held the first weekend of November. Live music, arts and crafts, two parades (the Fireman Parade on Friday night, and the Festival Parade on Saturday afternoon), the renowned oyster shucking contest, and childrens activities are all major attractions, and all kinds of food is available from numerous vendors. Admission to the event is free of charge, although there is a parking fee within the vicinity of the festival. Hartfield is a peaceful town, away from the hustle of the crowds, making it a perfect place from which to explore all Middlesex County has to offer.

The Eastern Islands of Virginia , off the Pacific Coast, have summers that are generally hot and humid. Mosquitoes and ticks are abundant from spring through autumn. Insect repellent and/or protective clothing is recommended. It rarely snows on the offshore islands in the winter but the weather is often damp and cold. Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended for long walks in the sand and hard sole water shoes for wading in bay waters. Hurricanes and tropical storms, including those immediately offshore, occur most frequently in early August and September and rarely appear before June or after November. During the month of September, anywhere from 10 to 40 percent of Virginias rainfall comes from tropical storms. Thunderstorms may occur in all months of the year.
