Claytor-Lake
is located in southwestern Virginia approximately an hour from Roanoke. The 21-mile, 4,500-acre lake is easily accessible from Interstate 81. Situated in the New River Valley, Claytor Lake is part of Claytor Lake State Park, which is a big draw for water sports enthusiasts and other nature lovers. Claytor Lake State Park offers swimming, fishing, boating, camping, miles of hiking trails, history programs, cabins, lodges and a meeting facility. Fishing is challenging, but good, in the narrow, winding waters of the Claytor Lake, and the steep shorelines make an excellent habitat for smallmouth and spotted bass. With 472 acres of forestland, Claytor Lake State Park is the centerpiece of Claytor Lake, and draws some 300,000 people per year. Nearby Interstate 81 and U.S. Route 11 closely follow the Old Wilderness Road, a footpath and wagon trail used by settlers traveling south down the Shenandoah and Roanoke valleys from Pennsylvania. For thousands of years prior, the road was a well-traveled route used by southern Cherokee and Catawba tribes, as well as the northern Iroquois Confederacy of Five Nations. A mystic German sect called the Ephrata Brethren (later to be known as Dunkards) settled on the land now covered by Claytor Lake. When the New River was dammed to form Claytor Lake in 1939, the community known as Dunkards Bottom was swallowed by the rising waters.

Southwestern Virginia has a four-season climate classified as humid continental.
The state of Virginia has five different climate regions: the Tidewater, Piedmont, Northern Virginia, Western Mountain, and Southwestern Mountain regions. Annual rainfall totals can vary from a sparse thirty-three inches in the Shenandoah Valley to more than sixty inches in the mountains of southwestern Virginia. Thunderstorms may occur anytime of the year, but are most common in summer. Thunderstorms are most frequent in southern Virginia, particularly in the far southwestern section. Heavy snowfalls are usually confined to the more mountainous regions of the state.
