Galax
is an independent city located in the southwestern part of Virginia. It is bounded on the northeast by Carroll County and to the southwest by Grayson County. As of the 2000 census, the population was 6, 837. Located in the Appalachian Mountains, Galax has long been known for its traditional, or "old time" music and musicians. Although the entire Appalachian region is known for its music, Galax is one of the few areas of the country where this music has remained strongest, even among young people. The town is home to the largest Old Time Bluegrass Fiddler's Convention in the United States, and has been held here since 1935. The convention has always attracted the best up-and-coming musicians in the bluegrass music genre. Galax is also home to the historic Rex Theater, which offers Friday night concerts of live old-time and bluegrass music, vintage movie nights and community plays. The Rex is considered "the jewel in the crown of the City of Galax." The Blue Ridge Music Center, with its amphitheater and music museum, is just a few miles away on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 213. Galax is known as the "Gateway to the Blue Ridge Mountains, an area filled with natural scenic beauty and recreation. Located within, or very near Galax, are several golf courses, parks and campgrounds. The city also offers quaint downtown shops and great restaurants that offer everything from Aunt Bea's country cooking to ethnic cuisine.

The Northwest Blue Ridge Mountains range from 800 feet to over 6,600 feet and topography affects the local weather. Expect temperatures to be 10 to 20 degrees cooler on the mountaintops than in the cities below. Spring is unpredictable, particularly at the higher elevations. Summer is warm and humid, but more pleasant at the higher elevations, with temperatures rarely reaching 90 degrees. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are common in season. Winter is generally moderate, but extreme conditions can occur at the mountain peaks. It's not unusual to have warm temperatures in the valleys and snow in the higher areas. In the lowlands, snows of one inch or more occur just 1-5 times per year. More frequent and deeper snows fall at the higher elevations.
