Whitetop is an unincorporated community located in Grayson County, Virginia, in the southwestern part of the state. It is the southern terminus of the well-known Virginia Creeper Trail. Whitetop is named for nearby Whitetop Mountain, which is the second-tallest mountain in Virginia, behind Mount Rogers. The Virginia Creeper Trail is a 35-mile, multi-purpose rail trail that runs from Abingdon to Whitetop. It crosses numerous restored trestles and part of the Appalachian Trail. The trail runs along a right-of-way dating to the 1880s that first belonged to the Abingdon Coal and Iron Railroad. It extends from Abingdon, through Watauga, Alvarado, Damascus, Straight Branch, Taylors Valley, Creek Junction, Green Cove and Whitetop. The elevation of the trail drops approximately 300 feet from Alvarado to the South Holston River and then climbs nearly 2,000 feet to Whitetop. The Damascus to Whitetop trail follows Laurel Creek through mostly National Forest land. A rare 4-8-0 steam engine is located at the trailhead in Abingdon, and several restored stations survive beside the trail itself. Whitetop is also host to the Mountain Ramp Festival each May. This fun event offers authentic mountain arts and crafts and old time Bluegrass mountain music provided by some of the best fiddlers in the region. The highlight of the day is the Ramp Eating Contest ( a ramp is a wild leek that grows in the high mountains of southwest Virginia.)

Whitetop Weather & Climate

The mountainous Northeast region of Tennessee has a temperate climate with moderately cold winters and warm, humid summers. Precipitation is distributed fairly evenly throughout the year so there is no distinct wet or dry seasons. October has the least rainfall, July the most. Snowfall is variable from year to year, and some winters have relatively little. Thunderstorms occur anytime of the year, but are most frequent in spring and summer. Summer temperatures are rarely extreme, but the high humidity often makes it seem hotter than it actually is. Severe storms are infrequent in the state, being east of the center of tornado activity, south of most blizzard conditions, and too far inland to be affected by hurricanes.
