Bristol
is an independent city in southwest Virginia, bounded by Washington County, Virginia and Sullivan County, Tennessee. As of the 2000 census, the population was 17,367 residents. Bristol, Virginia is the twin city of Bristol, Tennessee, which is just across the state line. The Bureau of Economic Analysis combines the city of Bristol, Virginia with Washington County for statistical purposes, but it is an independent city. Originally named Goodson, it was renamed Bristol in 1890 (after Bristol, England.) Bristol is considered to be the Birthplace of Country Music according to a resolution passed by the US Congress in 1998 for its contributions to early country music recordings and influence. One of the locals from Bristol was the Carter Family, who got their start here in 1927. The city of Bristol is surrounded by natural beauty and unlimited outdoor recreational opportunities. There are hundreds of acres of beautiful lakes, national forests, trails and open space in the area. Activities include hiking and biking, boating, fishing, camping, horseback riding and picnicking. Other attractions near Bristol include the Carter Family Memorial Music Center, Bristol Caverns, Natural Tunnel State Park, Watauga Lake and Sugar Hollow Park Wetlands.

The climate of the northeastern Tennessee mountains is temperate with moderately cold winters and warm, humid summers. Precipitation is fairly well distributed throughout the year; as there is no distinct wet or dry seasons. October has the least rainfall, July the most. Snowfall is quite variable from year to year, and some winters have relatively little. Thunderstorms occur anytime of the year, but are most frequent in spring and summer. Summer temperatures are rarely extreme, but the high humidity often makes it seem hotter than it actually is. Snow is minimal in Tennessee except in the higher mountain regions. Severe storms are infrequent in the state, being east of the center of tornado activity, south of most blizzard conditions, and too far inland to be affected by hurricanes.
