Abingdon
is a historic town located in Washington County in southwest Virginia, about 133 miles southwest of Roanoke. As of the 2000 census, the population was 7,780. The whole town is a designated Virginia Historic Landmark and is one of the oldest English-speaking settlements west of the Blue Ridge. The land on which the town sits was originally surveyed between 1748 and 1750 and was part of the Great Road that cut through the wilderness on to Kingsport, Tennessee. Frontiersman, Daniel Boone first named the area Wolf Hills, and during Lord Dunmore's War, Black's Fort was established at this site to protect settlers from Indian attacks. In 1778, the community was made the county seat and named Abingdon. The town is also the ancestral home of Martha Washington and several Virginia governors. It's the final stop along the Virginia Creeper Trail, which allows pedestrian, cyclist and equestrian traffic, and extends from White Top Mountain to Damascus, Virginia. The Abingdon Historic District boasts a 20-block area with many historical attractions. Outdoor recreation includes hiking, biking and horseback riding along the Virginia Creeper Trail, or picnicking and other activities at one of the many Abingdon city parks. A Farmer's Market is held April through November, and the town is home to several festivals, including the famed Virginia Highlands Festival. Abingdon is also known for its performing and visual arts, and offers many specialty, antique and collectible shops.

The mountainous Northeast region of Tennessee has a temperate climate with moderately cold winters and warm, humid summers. Precipitation is distributed fairly evenly throughout the year so there is no distinct wet or dry seasons. October has the least rainfall, July the most. Snowfall is variable from year to year, and some winters have relatively little. Thunderstorms occur anytime of the year, but are most frequent in spring and summer. Summer temperatures are rarely extreme, but the high humidity often makes it seem hotter than it actually is. Severe storms are infrequent in the state, being east of the center of tornado activity, south of most blizzard conditions, and too far inland to be affected by hurricanes.
