Mouth-of-Wilson is a small community located in Grayson County in southwestern Virginia, just north of the North Carolina border. The community lies in the Appalachian Mountains on the western banks of the New River. The major highway through the area is U.S. Route 58. The unique name "Mouth of Wilson" originates from a young surveyor named Wilson, who died and was buried in a creek while surveying the line between Virginia and North Carolina in 1749. The creek was henceforth known as Wilson Creek. Grayson Highlands State Park is located approximately 12 miles west of Mouth of Wilson. The park includes camping, hiking, horseback riding trails, a visitors center and vistas of Mount Rogers and Whitetop Mountain, the tallest mountains in Virginia. Grayson Highlands Park hosts an annual Fall Festival, celebrating mountain traditions such as bluegrass music, horses, and blacksmithing. Mouth of Wilson is also home to the Oak Hill Academy, a Baptist-affiliated secondary school built in 1878. Rev. W.A. Hash became principal in 1923 and oversaw the accreditation of the school and construction of dormitories, a water system, and electric lines. In recent history, the school has earned seven national basketball championships since 1993, becoming widely recognized for its athletic programs. Most students are boarders, causing the population of Mouth of Wilson to increase substantially during the school year.

Mouth of Wilson Weather & Climate

The Northwest Blue Ridge Mountains range from 800 feet to over 6,600 feet and topography affects the local weather. Expect temperatures to be 10 to 20 degrees cooler on the mountaintops than in the cities below. Spring is unpredictable, particularly at the higher elevations. Summer is warm and humid, but more pleasant at the higher elevations, with temperatures rarely reaching 90 degrees. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are common in season. Winter is generally moderate, but extreme conditions can occur at the mountain peaks. It's not unusual to have warm temperatures in the valleys and snow in the higher areas. In the lowlands, snows of one inch or more occur just 1-5 times per year. More frequent and deeper snows fall at the higher elevations.
