Mount-Jackson
is one of the small towns of the Shenandoah County, located in northwestern Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the population was 1,664 residents. The town lies in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley and is rich in history and culture. The town was named to honor Andrew Jackson who was a frequent visitor in his travels from Washington D.C. to his home in Tennessee. There are many historic buildings in Mt. Jackson featuring a wide variety of architecture, several of which served as Confederate and Union Army field hospitals during the Civil War. Mt. Jackson successfully blends the old and new, from historic architecture and quaint antique shops to the latest in technological advancements. It's a town rich in Civil War history and the Mt. Jackson Historical District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Union Church in downtown Mount Jackson was used as a hospital, and you can see where the wounded soldiers wrote their names on the wall. Our Soldiers Cemetery has a monument listing the names of soldiers from all the Confederate states who died at the Mount Jackson Confederate Hospital. Also, near Mount Jackson, is the longest covered bridge in Virginia. Recreation in the area includes fishing, hiking, camping, skiing and golf. Mt. Jackson is located mid-way between Winchester and Harrisonburg on I-81 at exits 269 or 272.

Northwest Virginia , near the West Virginia border, has a distinct four-season climate. The mountain at Bryce Resort climbs to 1,750 feet above sea level. As such, it's one of the snowiest regions of the state. Some of the heaviest snowfalls in the United States occur in the Appalachians of West Virginia and the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The climate consists of moderately cold winters and comfortable cool summers. The normal average temperature is 47.6 degrees F., with summer temperatures averaging 70-80 degrees F. The average annual precipitation is 42 inches.
