Fort-Valley
is a mountain valley located in Shenandoah County in northwest Virginia. It's a "valley within a valley" that lies between the two arms of the northern Massanutten Mountain range in the Shenandoah Valley. The valley is closed at both ends, except for a very narrow gap at the northern end through which Passage Creek flows and a single road, State Route 678. It opens out as one moves toward the center, becoming about three miles wide at its widest, and 23 miles long. Several roads exit the valley along the way, however. Fort Valley is mostly rural, consisting of private farmland, surrounded by the George Washington National Forest. The Elizabeth Furnace and Camp Roosevelt recreational areas, belonging to the national forest, are located within the Fort Valley. Several small towns are found along the valley, each one with its own historic stories, architecture, unique shops and restaurants. All are a slice of small town, rural life set against a scenic mountain backdrop. History buffs will want to stop and explore Stonewall Jacksons Museum, Crystal Caverns, Museum of American Presidents , and the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park. Other attractions in Fort Valley includeShenandoah Vineyards, North Mountain Vineyards and Shenandoah Caverns. Two world class golf resorts are located in the valley and other recreational activities include snow skiing in the wintertime, hiking and biking. The Shenandoah Valley is also home to the annual summer Shenandoah Valley Music Festival.

North Central Virginia's Piedmont Region has a humid, subtropical climate with four, distinct seasons. Heavy snows are common in the wintertime in the Piedmont region, while the rest of the state may receive only a fraction of snow. Cold air masses arriving from the Blue Ridge Mountains, especially during the winter, can lead to significant snowfall and ice storms from early November to mid-March. Thunderstorms are possible in all months of the year, but more common in the warm, humid days of summer. Although the temperature of Virginia varies according to location, it generally becomes increasingly warmer farther to the south. During the month of September, anywhere from 10 to 40 percent of Virginias rainfall comes from hurricanes and tropical storms.
