Luray
is a small town in Page County in north-central Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the population was 4,871. It lies within the heart of the beautiful Shenandoah Valley and offers Civil War historic spots, hiking trails along country roads, rivers, lovely parks, vista overlooks and small town charm. Luray is the nearest town to Thornton Gap, which is the entrance to the Skyline Drive (to the east) and serves as the headquarters for Shenandoah National Park. The nearness of the South Fork of the Shenandoah River provides fishing and boating and white water rafting, but the town is probably best known as being home to Luray Caverns. Originally called Luray Cave, this large underground cavern system has drawn visitors since 1878. The caverns are best known for the Great Stalacpipe Organ, a lithophone made from solenoid fired strikers that tap stalactites of various sizes to produce tones similar to those of xylophones, tuning forks, or bells. Another attraction is the Luray Singing Tower, officially known as the Belle Brown Northcott Memorial, which was erected in 1937. At 117 feet in height, the Luray Singing Tower contains a carillon of 47 bells. The largest bell weighs 7,640 pounds and is six feet in diameter. The smallest weighs a mere 12 1/2 pounds. Recognized as one of the countrys major carillons, regularly scheduled recitals are held, free of charge, through the spring, summer and fall. The carillon is located in a park opposite Luray Caverns.

North Central Virginia's Piedmont Region has a humid, subtropical climate with four, distinct seasons. Heavy snows are common in the wintertime in the Piedmont region, while the rest of the state may receive only a fraction of snow. Cold air masses arriving from the Blue Ridge Mountains, especially during the winter, can lead to significant snowfall and ice storms from early November to mid-March. Thunderstorms are possible in all months of the year, but more common in the warm, humid days of summer. Although the temperature of Virginia varies according to location, it generally becomes increasingly warmer farther to the south. During the month of September, anywhere from 10 to 40 percent of Virginias rainfall comes from hurricanes and tropical storms.
