Elkton
is located in Rockingham County in northern Virginia's beautiful Shenandoah Valley. The population is approximately 2,900 residents. Formerly known as Conrad's Store, the name of the town was changed to Elkton for Elk Run Stream. It's situated along the south fork of the Shenandoah River at the intersection of east-west U.S. Route 33 and north-south U.S. Route 340. Conrads Store was a general store built in 1812 by George Conrad, who was a son of Captain Stephen Conrad who served during the American Revolution. In 1816, Conrads Store became a U.S. post office. In September 1866, postal service was briefly discontinued at Conrads Store, and intermittently resumed and discontinued over the next decade. Finally, in1881, the name was changed to Elkton, after it became a stop on the Shenandoah Valley Railroad. In January 1881, Elkton established a post office, and it officially incorporated on March 14, 1908.Historic buildings in the town include the Jennings House, built in 1840 by Dr. Samuel B. Jennings, which now houses the local government. Also, the Miller-Kate House was the headquarters of General Stonewall Jackson at the start of the Shenandoah Valley Campaign during the Civil War. Now the house is a town landmark and museum. An interesting note - many visitors report stories of ghosts or unusual behavior while in the Miller-Kate House.

North Central Virginia's Piedmont Region has a humid, subtropical climate with four, distinct seasons. Heavy snows are common in the wintertime in the Piedmont region, while the rest of the state may receive only a fraction of snow. Cold air masses arriving from the Blue Ridge Mountains, especially during the winter, can lead to significant snowfall and ice storms from early November to mid-March. Thunderstorms are possible in all months of the year, but more common in the warm, humid days of summer. Although the temperature of Virginia varies according to location, it generally becomes increasingly warmer farther to the south. During the month of September, anywhere from 10 to 40 percent of Virginias rainfall comes from hurricanes and tropical storms.
