Massanutten-Resort
is located in Rockingham County in northern Virginia. There is also a small town named Massanutten built around the ski resort. The permanent population of the town was 1,945 as of the 2000 census. Massanutten is part of the Harrisonburg metropolitan area. Massanutten Resort has humble beginnings going back to 1968 when John L. Hopkins II, a local farmer, sat at the kitchen table of his great-grandfather's house, gazing out the window at the spectacular view of Massanutten Peak. By 1971, the development of 5,200 acres in Massanutten, by a group of ten investors, was announced at a luncheon held at Spotswood Country Club in Harrisonburg. Fast forward 30 years and Massanutten Resort is a thriving four-season resort and community. The resort offers something for everyone, including snow skiing, snowboarding and tubing, fantastic golf, an indoor and outdoor water park, spa treatments, craft classes, fine dining and much more. Shopping is also an experience at Massanutten Resort, with everything from unique souvenirs, a Teddy Bear factory, a general store and general necessities. Some of the special events at Massanutten Resort include a wine fest, summer music fest and mountain jamboree and a fall festival. Massanutten is also near many of northern Virginia's other famous attractions such as the Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive, Natural Bridge, many caverns and historic spots.

North Central Virginia's Piedmont Region has a humid, subtropical climate with four, distinct seasons. Heavy snows are common in the wintertime in the Piedmont region, while the rest of the state may receive only a fraction of snow. Cold air masses arriving from the Blue Ridge Mountains, especially during the winter, can lead to significant snowfall and ice storms from early November to mid-March. Thunderstorms are possible in all months of the year, but more common in the warm, humid days of summer. Although the temperature of Virginia varies according to location, it generally becomes increasingly warmer farther to the south. During the month of September, anywhere from 10 to 40 percent of Virginias rainfall comes from hurricanes and tropical storms.
