Stanardsville
is located in Greene County in north-central Virginia and serves as the county seat. As of the 2000 census, the population was 476 residents. The name of the town comes from Robert Stanard, a benefactor who donated land for public use. Stanardsville is part of the Charlottesville metropolitan area. Greene County is a gateway to the Blue Ridge Mountains and one of the final stops before entering the Shenandoah National Park. Nearby attractions include the Skyline Drive and Appalachian Trail. Greene County is the perfect place for relaxation in a beautiful setting, with incredible views, fresh air, picturesque small towns and friendly people. True seclusion and privacy can be found in Stanardsville. Outdoor recreational activities include hiking, mountain biking, camping, horseback riding, fishing, and sight seeing along one of the nations most scenic byways. The 105-mile Skyline Drive winds along the crest of the mountains through the entire length of the Shenandoah National Park. The drive is a particular treat in the fall when the leaves all change to a canvas of sensational colors. Stanardsville is also near some well known historic sites such as Thomas Jeffersons Monticello, James Madisons Montpelier and the 225-year old Michie Tavern. The Greene County Historical Society and Museum is also a must see for history buffs. The historical society also offers a guide for a walking tour of downtown Stanardsville.

North Central Virginia's Piedmont Region has a humid, subtropical climate with four, distinct seasons. Heavy snows are common in the wintertime in the Piedmont region, while the rest of the state may receive only a fraction of snow. Cold air masses arriving from the Blue Ridge Mountains, especially during the winter, can lead to significant snowfall and ice storms from early November to mid-March. Thunderstorms are possible in all months of the year, but more common in the warm, humid days of summer. Although the temperature of Virginia varies according to location, it generally becomes increasingly warmer farther to the south. During the month of September, anywhere from 10 to 40 percent of Virginias rainfall comes from hurricanes and tropical storms.
