Shenandoah
is the name of a small town, a valley and national park in northwestern Virginia. The small town of Shenandoah is located in Page County and had a population of 1,878 as of the 2000 census. It was founded in 1837 by two brothers, Daniel and Henry Forrer, who saw a great opportunity in the area's natural resources, including iron ore deposits, hardwood and high-grade limestone. The Shenandoah Valley is both a geographic valley and cultural region of the state. The valley is bounded to the east by the Blue Ridge Mountains, to the west by the eastern front of the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians, to the north by the Potomac River and to the south by the James River. Most well-known, however, is the spectacular Shenandoah National Park, which encompasses part of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The park is long and narrow, with the broad Shenandoah River and valley on the west side and the rolling hills of the Virginia Piedmont on the east. Almost forty percent of the land area has been designated as wilderness and is protected by the National Wilderness Preservation System. The park is best known for Skyline Drive, a 105-mile road that runs the entire length of the park along the ridge of the mountains. The drive is particularly popular in the fall when the leaves are changing colors. Also, there are over 500 miles of trails within the park, with one of the most popular being Old Rag Mountain Other activities in the Shenandoah National Park include horseback riding, mountain biking, and camping.

North Central Virginia's Piedmont Region has a humid, subtropical climate with four, distinct seasons. Heavy snows are common in the wintertime in the Piedmont region, while the rest of the state may receive only a fraction of snow. Cold air masses arriving from the Blue Ridge Mountains, especially during the winter, can lead to significant snowfall and ice storms from early November to mid-March. Thunderstorms are possible in all months of the year, but more common in the warm, humid days of summer. Although the temperature of Virginia varies according to location, it generally becomes increasingly warmer farther to the south. During the month of September, anywhere from 10 to 40 percent of Virginias rainfall comes from hurricanes and tropical storms.
