Sperryville
is an unincorporated village located in Rappahannock County in northern Virginia. The Thornton River runs through the scenic town, which sits at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The community of Sperryville is considered a gateway to the Shenandoah National Park and popular Old Rag Mountain, and therefore has a number of businesses that cater to tourists. Several souvenir and produce stands line U.S. Route 211 during weekend tourist season, and the town also offers excellent restaurants, specialty shops, antique stores, art galleries, and several bed and breakfasts. Nearby attractions include the spectacular Skyline Drive, which runs along the crest of the mountains through the forests and past spectacular vistas. The Skyline Drive is a National Scenic Byway and runs the entire length of the Shenandoah National Park. Sperryville is also just a short distance to Old Rag Mountain, which is a popular hiking destination. It has a summit elevation of 3,291 feet, and in contrast to most mountains of the Blue Ridge, Old Rag Mountain has an exposed, rocky summit. Other activities in the area include rock climbing and rappelling, fishing, rafting, horseback riding, picnicking, camping and wildlife viewing. Beautiful anytime of the year, it's especially breathtaking in the autumn with the changing of the leaves.

North Central Virginia's Piedmont Region has a humid, subtropical climate with four, distinct seasons. Heavy snows are common in the wintertime in the Piedmont region, while the rest of the state may receive only a fraction of snow. Cold air masses arriving from the Blue Ridge Mountains, especially during the winter, can lead to significant snowfall and ice storms from early November to mid-March. Thunderstorms are possible in all months of the year, but more common in the warm, humid days of summer. Although the temperature of Virginia varies according to location, it generally becomes increasingly warmer farther to the south. During the month of September, anywhere from 10 to 40 percent of Virginias rainfall comes from hurricanes and tropical storms.
