Winchester
is a historic city located in the northwestern portion Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the population was 23,585. Winchester is home to Shenandoah University and the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley. The city of Winchester was the first city south of the Potomac River to install electric light and it's filled with history. More than 12 places are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, some dating to the mid-1700s. The Winchester Historic District, which dates from 1750-1930, is located along US 522, US11 and US 50/US17. In addition to those listed on the National Register, Winchester is home to many other historic sites, including Belle Grove Plantation (c.1797,) the Red Lion Tavern (c.1783) and the site of Historic Fort Loudoun (c.1756.) The city of Winchester is home to the annual Apple Blossom Festival, which has existed since 1924. The festival, which draws approximately 250,000 visitors each year, includes a carnival, the longest fireman's parade and third longest grand feature parade in the United States. Winchester has more than 20 different artistic apples made by local artisans, that are made of various materials like wood, plaster, etc.. They were placed at a specific location at the artists request after being auctioned off. For example, a bright red apple with a large stethoscope attached to it was placed beside an entrance to the Winchester Medical Center.

Northwest Virginia , near the West Virginia border, has a distinct four-season climate. Bryce Mountain is a mountain summit in Shenandoah County in the northwest portion of the state. The mountain climbs to 1,699 feet (517.86 meters) above sea level. As such, it's one of the snowiest regions of the state. Some of the heaviest snowfalls in the United States occur in the Appalachians of West Virginia and the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The climate consists of moderately cold winters and comfortable cool summers. The normal average temperature is 47.6 degrees F., with summer temperatures averaging 70-80 degrees F. The average annual precipitation is 42 inches.
