Urbanna is a picturesque village located along the Rappahannock River in Middlesex County on the eastern shore of Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the population was 543. Established by an Act of Assembly at Jamestown in 1680, Urbanna is one of the nation's oldest towns. With a land mass of less than half a square mile, it's also one of its smallest. It was first established as a port for the shipment of tobacco to England. The old tobacco warehouse (1766) is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and serves as a visitor's center today. The Urbanna Courthouse was built in 1748 and is also on the National Register of Historic Places. The town was incorporated on April 2, 1902 and is the county's largest commercial center and the only incorporated area in the county. However, the county seat of government was moved to the Village of Saluda. For over fifty years, the town has been home to the popular Urbanna Oyster Festival. It's held the first weekend in November each year and offers live music, two parades, the renowned oyster shucking contest, childrens activities and lots of great food. Annual attendance over the two days is usually between 50,000-75,000 and admission is free of charge. Since 2001, Urbanna has also hosted "Art on the Half Shell," a one-day, juried arts and crafts show. Local and out of town artists are featured, with a wide variety of artistic mediums presented.

Urbanna Weather & Climate

The Eastern Islands of Virginia , off the Pacific Coast, have summers that are generally hot and humid. Mosquitoes and ticks are abundant from spring through autumn. Insect repellent and/or protective clothing is recommended. It rarely snows on the offshore islands in the winter but the weather is often damp and cold. Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended for long walks in the sand and hard sole water shoes for wading in bay waters. Hurricanes and tropical storms, including those immediately offshore, occur most frequently in early August and September and rarely appear before June or after November. During the month of September, anywhere from 10 to 40 percent of Virginias rainfall comes from tropical storms. Thunderstorms may occur in all months of the year.
