Harrisonburg
is an independent city located in the Shenandoah Valley of northwestern Virginia. The estimated population is 40,468. When the slaves of the Shenandoah Valley were freed in 1865, they set up a town near modern-day Harrisonburg called Newtown. This settlement was eventually annexed by the city of Harrisonburg around 1892. Today, the old city of Newtown is still the home of the majority of Harrisonburgs predominantly black churches such as First Baptist and Bethel AME. The Shenandoah Valley is a beautiful, tranquil place, home to many quaint little towns. Harrisonburg, however, is not a "sleepy" town, but a trendy place full of museums, art galleries and locally-owned restaurants. It is home to James Madison University and the 10-block area between the college and the historic downtown was Virginia's first designated Arts & Cultural District. Some of the other attractions include the Harrisonburg Children's Museum, Downtown Harrisonburg Farmers' Market, Harrisonburg Fire Museum and the Crossroads Valley Brethren-Mennonite Heritage Center. The city is also home to the region's largest indoor waterpark, four golf courses, an arboretum and botanical garden and the John C. Wells Planetarium, one of the three "total immersion" planetariums in the nation. Harrisonburg hosts the Virginia Fly Fishing Festival in April and the Rockingham County Fair in August.

North Central Virginia's Piedmont Region has a humid, subtropical climate with four, distinct seasons. Heavy snows are common in the wintertime in the Piedmont region, while the rest of the state may receive only a fraction of snow. Cold air masses arriving from the Blue Ridge Mountains, especially during the winter, can lead to significant snowfall and ice storms from early November to mid-March. Thunderstorms are possible in all months of the year, but more common in the warm, humid days of summer. Although the temperature of Virginia varies according to location, it generally becomes increasingly warmer farther to the south. During the month of September, anywhere from 10 to 40 percent of Virginias rainfall comes from hurricanes and tropical storms.
